19th Century Islamic Brass Qalamdan Inkwell with Calligraphy, Persia/Turkey

A finely crafted 19th-century Islamic qalamdan (pen case with inkwell), executed in solid brass and richly adorned with engraved Arabic calligraphy. This elegant writing implement reflects the refined artistic traditions of the Persian and Ottoman worlds, where calligraphy was revered as a supreme art form.

The piece features a classic elongated rectangular form with rounded ends, opening to reveal a tubular interior compartment designed to house reed pens. Attached to the body is a hinged inkwell with a sculptural, shell-form lid, intricately engraved with Moorish-inspired motifs and decorative banding. The entire surface is embellished with finely incised script and ornamental detailing, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship.

Both functional and symbolic, qalamdans were essential tools for scholars and scribes, as well as status objects representing education, culture, and devotion to the written word.
