Pair of Monumental Indian Polychrome Carved Wood Horses on Wheels, 19th C.
A remarkable companion pair of monumental 19th-century Indian hand-carved wooden horses, each retaining layers of beautifully aged polychrome decoration and mounted on its original wheeled wooden platform.
Dating to approximately 1880, these impressive sculptural horses combine folk-art character, ceremonial presence and the wonderfully imperfect surfaces that can only develop through generations of age and use.
Each horse is individually carved rather than mechanically reproduced. Although closely related in scale and construction, the two are intentionally not identical. Their heads, facial expressions, harnesses, saddles, carving and surviving painted decoration differ, giving each horse a distinct personality while allowing them to work exceptionally well as a companion pair.
The horses stand proudly on elongated wooden platforms fitted with substantial wheels. Their bodies are carved with pronounced saddles, bridles and harness details, while the elongated heads, alert ears and stylized features give them the expressive quality associated with traditional Indian folk sculpture.
Particularly compelling are the surviving polychrome surfaces. Traces and layers of earthy red, ochre, green, brown and natural wood remain throughout, softened by approximately 140 years of oxidation, handling and wear. Rather than appearing newly restored, the horses retain a richly layered, archaeological surface with exposed wood, rubbed pigments and irregular coloration.
This aged surface is one of their greatest decorative strengths.
At approximately 36 inches high × 30 inches wide × 13 inches deep each, these are substantial objects—not small tabletop toys. Their scale gives them enough visual presence to function as genuine sculptural elements within an interior.
Today, I would position them less as children's toys and more as large-scale Indian folk-art sculptures and collectible decorative objects. They would be exceptional displayed together in a large entrance hall, library, loft, gallery, conservatory or beneath a console, while their individual personalities also allow them to be separated and placed in different areas of an interior.
Their weathered surfaces are particularly compatible with today's interest in interiors combining important antique and ethnographic objects with contemporary, wabi-sabi, Belgian, Mediterranean and Organic Modern furnishings. Against quiet plaster, limestone, aged oak or contemporary upholstery, the horses become sculptural focal points rather than simply period decorative accessories.
The wheeled construction suggests a tradition of movable horse figures, but I would avoid definitively describing these examples as temple horses, parade horses, or toys made for noble children unless you have documentation supporting those specific functions. Their Indian origin, construction and late-19th-century character are strong enough without adding an uncertain story.

The horses are presented in authentic antique condition. There is extensive age-related wear to the polychrome decoration, together with rubbing, chips, losses, cracks, abrasions, old repairs and other irregularities expected of 19th-century hand-carved wooden objects. These characteristics are visible in the photographs and form an integral part of their historic character.
