About the Piece
A distinctive pair of vintage Orientalist figural table lamps, each depicting a seated figure in traditional dress and turban, posed cross-legged upon a tasseled cushion and holding a tall lamp standard.
The figures are richly finished in deep green, burgundy and dark tones with gilt-painted detailing along the costumes, jewelry, headdresses and bases. The sculptural modeling and hand-applied coloration give the pair considerable decorative presence, while the matching composition makes them particularly well suited for placement on either side of a console, credenza, fireplace or pair of bedside tables.
The lamps reflect the European Orientalist decorative tradition, in which imagined representations of North African, Middle Eastern and other non-European subjects appeared frequently in furnishings and decorative arts. Because some terminology historically associated with this type of imagery is now considered dated or offensive, MOSAIK describes the pair using the more neutral art-historical term Orientalist figural lamps.
An unusual decorative pair with strong sculptural character, suitable for an eclectic, maximalist, Hollywood Regency, Mediterranean or globally collected interior.
