About the Piece
Striking vintage Moroccan Berber wall sconce shade, handcrafted from stretched hide parchment over a sculptural iron framework and individually hand-painted with bold geometric motifs inspired by traditional North African Berber decoration. Dating to circa 1980, this unusual wall piece has a distinctive elongated diamond or triangular silhouette. The translucent natural hide is painted in a vibrant palette of red, crimson, henna, ochre, yellow, violet and soft neutral tones, while the dark iron framework defines the architectural form. Linear and geometric patterns recall the visual vocabulary found in traditional Moroccan Berber textiles, tattoos, jewelry and decorative arts. The natural variations and irregularities of the hide, together with the hand-painted decoration, give the piece an expressive, one-of-a-kind character. When positioned over a wall light, the parchment-like hide gently diffuses the illumination and creates a warm atmospheric glow while emphasizing the painted colors and patterns. Importantly, this piece contains no electrical components. It was designed as a decorative wall shade to sit over an existing wall-mounted light source or electrical fitting. It may also be displayed without illumination as a sculptural piece of Moroccan tribal wall art. Its graphic form works particularly well in Mediterranean, Moorish, Moroccan, Spanish Colonial, bohemian and globally collected interiors. It could create a dramatic accent in an entry hall, stairway, bedroom, library or along a gallery wall. The combination of primitive materials and strong geometric abstraction also makes it surprisingly effective within a contemporary interior. Additional examples are available. Each is handmade and individually decorated, so the painted motifs and coloration vary slightly from piece to piece. This makes them particularly attractive installed as a group or rhythmic series along a hallway or staircase while retaining the individuality of each shade. Dimensions: Height: 17 in.
