About the Piece

A striking vintage Moroccan Moorish hanging lantern, handcrafted in Marrakech circa 1999, featuring a sculptural star-form body of clear glass and intricately pierced metalwork with a beautifully aged dark bronze-toned patina. The lantern has a particularly architectural silhouette. Its central body is constructed as a multi-pointed geometric star, with individual clear glass panels framed by slender hand-worked metal sections. Above and below, pierced domed elements balance the composition, while pointed architectural details around the central section reinforce the lantern's distinctly Moorish character. Throughout the fixture, the metal has been meticulously hand-cut and pierced with traditional Moroccan geometric, floral and Islamic-inspired motifs. These openwork patterns are not merely decorative: when the lantern is illuminated, light passes through both the transparent glass and pierced metal, producing an atmospheric interplay of illumination, shadow and pattern. The use of clear rather than colored glass gives this example a particularly versatile appearance. It retains the exotic architectural character of traditional Moroccan lighting while allowing it to work beautifully in more restrained contemporary interiors. The dark patinated metal provides an attractive contrast against the transparent glass and emphasizes the intricate handcrafted construction. Measuring 24 inches high × 12 inches in diameter for the lantern body alone, the fixture has substantial presence without becoming oversized. The stated dimensions exclude the suspension chain and ceiling canopy, allowing the overall hanging height to be adapted to the installation. This lantern would make an exceptional accent in a Mediterranean villa, Spanish Colonial residence, Moorish Revival interior, contemporary entry hall, dining room, bedroom, covered loggia or eclectic designer interior. Its strong geometric profile also makes it particularly effective when juxtaposed with clean modern architecture. Handmade in Marrakech, Morocco, circa 1999, the fixture reflects the long tradition of Moroccan metal and glass lighting, where individual components are cut, pierced, shaped and assembled by skilled artisans. Subtle irregularities are inherent to this handcrafted process and contribute to the individuality and character of the piece. The lantern has been rewired for U.S. electrical use and accommodates one light bulb up to 60 watts. It is ready for installation and includes a suspension chain and ceiling canopy. Additional chain can be added according to the required ceiling height. For indoor use or a protected covered area only. The lantern remains in good vintage condition, with attractive age-appropriate surface variation and a rich dark bronze patina consistent with its handcrafted metal construction.
