Postmodern Italian Cobalt Blue Murano Glass & Chrome Wall Sconce, 1980s 1 of 7
A dramatic vintage Italian Postmodern wall sconce, circa 1980s, featuring a sculptural crescent of brilliant cobalt-blue glass mounted on polished chrome hardware. Attributed to Mauro Marzollo for ITRE, the fixture captures the exuberant color, bold geometry and sophisticated materials that characterized some of the most distinctive Italian lighting of the period. The focal point is the substantial deep cobalt-blue glass diffuser, formed into a broad half-moon or crescent silhouette. Viewed from the front, the intensely saturated blue glass creates an almost abstract composition, while from the side its shallow curved profile reveals the thickness and sculptural quality of the material. The glass is mounted against a streamlined polished chrome structure with a circular chrome wall plate. The reflective metal provides a crisp counterpoint to the saturated blue, creating a distinctly 1980s Italian Postmodern aesthetic that also recalls Space Age and Memphis Milano design. When illuminated, the concealed light source interacts with the blue glass while the fixture itself retains the appearance of a piece of wall-mounted glass sculpture. Even when switched off, its strong color and minimalist geometry give the sconce considerable decorative presence. This is one of seven matching wall sconces available, offering an unusual opportunity for a large-scale installation. A pair could flank a mirror, artwork or doorway, while several could be installed rhythmically along a hallway, dining room, hotel-style corridor or dramatic staircase. A complete grouping of seven would create an exceptional architectural lighting installation. The fixture measures approximately 13.5 inches wide × 9.5 inches deep × 9.5 inches high, with a circular backplate approximately 4.5 inches in diameter. The wall sconce uses a T3 halogen lamp, maximum 100 watts. It has been wired and tested. Buyers should always have vintage lighting inspected and installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with local electrical requirements. The glass is in excellent vintage condition with no chips noted, and the chrome retains an attractive polished appearance with minor wear consistent with age. A highly decorative example of 1980s Italian designer lighting, combining vibrant cobalt glass, polished chrome and an unmistakably Postmodern sculptural silhouette. Seven wall sconces are available. Price is for one sconce.
