About the Piece
Large Chinese Hand-Painted Wood Ram Sculpture with Zodiac Motifs
An impressive late 20th-century Chinese carved wood ram sculpture, distinguished by its elaborate painted decoration and rich turquoise, brown, and gold palette. Depicted reclining with its head raised, the ram rests upon gilded hooves, its black eyes and slightly open mouth lending the figure an alert, expressive presence.
Dense gold-toned scrollwork embellishes the brown body, interspersed with Chinese zodiac imagery, including dragons and roosters. A decorative saddle painted in vivid turquoise introduces blooming lotus flowers, stylized foliage, and gold accents. The intricate surface decoration evokes the ornamental richness of Chinese cloisonné through hand-painted work on wood.
Standing 26 inches high, this substantial animal sculpture makes a striking focal point on a broad console, low display platform, or spacious entryway table. Its sculptural form and ornate detailing complement Chinoiserie, eclectic, and collected interiors.
