About the Piece

n impressive pair of antique Indian hand-carved wood architectural fragments, now mounted on custom wood stands for display as freestanding sculptural objects. Tall and unusually narrow in proportion, each carving is worked in deep relief with an elaborate composition of scrolling foliage, floral forms and stylized figural ornament. The dense carving and strong vertical silhouette suggest that these pieces were originally incorporated into a larger architectural structure, possibly as decorative brackets, supports or truss elements. The pair retains a beautiful warm brown surface with pronounced natural wood grain and the softened character that develops through considerable age. Deeply undercut passages create areas of light and shadow throughout the carvings, making the pieces particularly effective when viewed from different angles. Rather than over-restoring the wood, the surviving surface has been allowed to retain its historic character. Variations in tone, age-related cracks, abrasions, losses and irregularities contribute to the sculptural quality and authenticity of these architectural fragments. Please refer closely to the photographs for the condition and surviving carved details. Each fragment has been mounted vertically on a substantial dark wood rectangular plinth measuring approximately 13 by 10 inches. The contemporary display bases provide stability while allowing the antique carvings to function independently as decorative sculpture without altering their historic character. Their tall, slender proportions make the pair particularly effective flanking a console, doorway, fireplace or architectural opening. They could also be displayed individually on pedestals or incorporated into a contemporary interior as dramatic examples of antique Indian architectural carving. The warm aged wood would contrast especially well with limestone, travertine, plaster and other neutral materials in a modern Mediterranean, wabi-sabi or collected contemporary interior. Offered as a pair. Dimensions: Each carved wood fragment approximately 45 in. H × 10 in. W × 6.5 in. D. Each wood display base approximately 13 in. × 10 in. Materials: Hand-carved wood; wood display bases. Origin: India. Condition: Antique condition with age-related wear, surface variation, cracks, abrasions and losses consistent with former architectural use.
