About the Piece

A fine antique 19th-century Indo-Persian decorative vessel, finely worked in brass or bronze with dense engraved and etched ornament. The rounded body is enriched with recessed floral motifs, scrolling foliage and arabesques associated with Mughal and Mamluk Revival metalwork.

The elegant bottle-form silhouette has a beautifully aged surface and strong sculptural presence. Its intricate decoration and compact proportions make it especially attractive as a collectible Islamic metalwork object, flower vase, candle holder, or decorative accent for a shelf, mantel or console.

Attributed to Northern India, 19th century. Dimensions: 9 in. H × 5 in. diameter. Technique: cast, engraved and etched. Similar examples of Indo-Persian metalwork are illustrated in Mark Zebrowski, Gold, Silver & Bronze from Mughal India, Alexandria Press, 1997, p. 242, as well as reference works on Islamic and Persian decorative arts.
