19th Century Chinese Qing Dynasty Elmwood Altar Console Table, Shanxi Province

An exceptional 19th-century Chinese Qing Dynasty altar table handcrafted in Shanxi Province from solid elmwood (Hetao Mu). Featuring an impressive one-piece plank top with elegant upturned flanges, this long console table embodies the refined proportions and timeless craftsmanship of traditional Chinese furniture.

The scalloped apron is beautifully carved with auspicious ruyi and lingzhi motifs—symbols of prosperity, longevity, and good fortune—while the reeded legs are accented by finely hand-carved cloud-form spandrels and joined by a decorative stretcher with arrow-form detailing. Constructed using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, the table retains its rich aged patina and remnants of its original finish, showcasing generations of authentic wear and character.

Originally used as a temple or ancestral altar table, this versatile piece now serves beautifully as a grand console behind a sofa, in an entry hall, or as a statement display table for art and decorative objects.
