{"product_id":"antique-persian-qajar-tinned-copper-engraved-tray-table-pt1021","title":"Antique Persian Qajar Tinned Copper Engraved Tray Table","description":"\u003cp\u003eAn exceptionally detailed antique Persian tinned copper tray, dating to the early 20 th century and later adapted as an elegant occasional table with a black and gold folding wooden stand. The large circular tray measures 20 inches in diameter and is remarkable for the extraordinary density of its hand-worked decoration. Nearly the entire surface is covered with finely executed engraved and etched floral, foliate, arabesque and geometric ornament, arranged in a sophisticated series of concentric decorative registers. At the center is an intricate circular medallion composed of tightly organized floral and geometric motifs. This central composition expands outward into successive bands of scrolling foliage, stylized blossoms, cartouche-like forms and minute punched or stippled details. The broad outer border introduces another geometric register before terminating in a subtly scalloped edge. The complexity of the decoration is characteristic of the highly developed tradition of Persian metalwork, in which utilitarian objects were transformed through painstaking surface ornament into works of decorative art. The tray is fashioned from copper with a traditional tinned surface, giving it its distinctive aged silver-gray appearance. Areas of wear reveal warmer copper tones beneath the tinning, creating a beautifully nuanced surface and emphasizing the object's considerable age. The naturally developed oxidation, patina and tonal variation have been retained and are particularly attractive against the extremely fine engraved decoration. Dating to the early 20th century and consistent with the Qajar-period Persian decorative tradition, the tray was originally conceived as a functional serving object rather than specifically as a table top. It now rests on a later folding wooden stand, finished in black with restrained gold-colored banding. The simple linear geometry of the base provides an effective visual counterpoint to the extraordinary richness of the antique metalwork and allows the tray to function as a practical side or drinks table. The combination creates a versatile occasional table measuring approximately 20 inches in diameter × 18.5 inches high—an excellent scale beside a lounge chair or sofa, between two occasional chairs, or as a distinctive drinks table. The removable nature of the tray also preserves the identity of the antique Persian metalwork rather than permanently altering it. A compelling decorative object for collectors of Persian, Qajar, Islamic and Middle Eastern metalwork, this table would integrate beautifully into an Orientalist, Islamic, Mediterranean, eclectic or contemporary collected interior. The antique tray displays wear, oxidation, losses and variations to the tinning, exposed copper and surface patina consistent with considerable age and use. The later wooden folding stand shows appropriate wear. Most importantly, I would not polish this tray. The aged tinning, exposed copper and oxidation visible in your photograph are part of what gives the 19th-century surface its depth and credibility.
