How to Wire a Moroccan Lantern

Open top Moroccan lanterns are simple to hang, maintain and change the bulb because they do not have to be wired up into the lantern. You can simply hang them to the rose hook and then place the pendant fitting and light bulb inside the Moroccan lamp.

Closed top Moroccan lanterns have to have a pendant fitting wired up into the lantern. Closed top Moorish style lantern is probably the more common and traditional type. They usually have a small door, which opens to give access for changing the bulb. You can easily wire the pendant fitting into the lantern separately, and then slide it into the "socket" section of the rose in the ceiling. If you use a standard ceiling rose, then it's worth remembering that some of these lanterns can be considerably heavy when balanced on your shoulders during the final fitting!
You will need a ceiling rose with an integral hook. You can buy these at any hardware store or electrical shop. These are ceiling roses that come in two parts which act very much like a plug and socket and are ideal for all lanterns, particularly the closed top style where the pendant fitting has to be wired into the lantern.

Brass ceiling rose with hook
The top section, which acts like a socket is wired up to the mains in the ceiling.
The bottom section, which has the hook, acts like the "plug" and is wired up to the pendant fitting which fits inside the Moroccan lantern. This lower section simply slots in and out of the top socket section.
They are available in various different colors to match the darkened tin or antiqued Moroccan brass lanterns.

Moroccan handicraft.
Do not expect absolute perfection in the Moroccan crafts of this beautiful rugged land. Slight imperfections are characteristic and should not be considered flaws. These are the signs of a genuine handcrafted item. Moroccan lanterns may be a little imperfect, colors may differ as everything is made by hand, and cutwork on lanterns may be slightly unsymmetrical. Enjoy instead, the beauty that has been produced by a labor of love that has continued for over two millennia.
